formula to find square root of a number

I think God would have been in a really bad mood decided to come up with something called algebra to trouble us! I’ve spent days trying to figure out a solution to this math problem which relates to formula to find square root of a number and I still can’t crack it. I’m particularly having problems with inequalities, algebra formulas and side-side-side similarity. Can anyone throw some light on how to go about solving such problems? I’ve tried various means that I could think of, but none helped. I need some urgent guidance now. Anybody?
